Payday loans from your bank?

Today my debit card was declined when my wife tried to make a purchase. When I checked my bank balance it was negative. It turns out that a check we received recently was still sitting on my nightstand waiting to be deposited. Oops! Now checks we wrote are bouncing left and right. But I digress...

Anyway, when I logged into my online banking to check my balance, I noticed a new link that lets me get an advance on my next automatic deposit. Out of curiosity I checked it out and, sure enough, they want to charge me $1 for every $10 I borrow. That's almost as bad as a check cashing place! Probably cheap for a payday loan though. I wouldn't know. Not anything I've had to do before. But I do find it interesting that the banks see payday loans as an opportunity now too. A quick search on the web shows that the term "Payday Loan" was searched for nearly 840,000 times in august. Incidentally, the term "Home Equity Loan" had only 650,000 searches in the same month. Sort of tells you how bad a shape we're generally in. People with equity are spending their equity. People with no equity are getting cash advances on their paychecks. And the rest of us are living paycheck-to-paycheck. Scary stuff.

My attempt at *natural* search engine placement

As you probably know, AME Labs is the inventor of SpeedMath, a fantastic software program that helps children memorize math facts. The people who have it absolutely love it and it is doing fairly well with just pay-per-click advertising and word-of-mouth. However, if you search for any of the following math-related keywords, you won't generally find SpeedMath anywhere near the top search results.

If I could get SpeedMath at the top page of search engines for... math, math tutoring, math worksheets, math game, math problem, math help, math game for kid, math tutor, online math game, math puzzle, math for kid, kindergarten math, math quiz, math homework help, math test, free math help, math lesson, kindergarten math game, free online math game, everyday math, basic math, 5th grade math, free math game, math teacher, math activity, math practice, math fun, math fact, 6th grade math, math web site, math trick, free math test, 7th grade math, 2nd grade math, math software, 4th grade math, math curriculum, math homework, math worksheet, elementary math, middle school math, 3rd grade math, math question, cool math, 8th grade math, free math, online math, fun math game, first grade math, free online math game for kid, 6th grade math worksheets, internet math game, cool math 4 kid, preschool math, and second grade math, then I would be extremely happy and probably increase my sales dramatically. Anyway, here's hoping!

Remembering September 11, 2001

I got an email from a dear friend with a link to a web site she put up today. It's an interesting poem, written by Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, called "Finding Peace".

It reminded me of a site I put up on September 12, 2001 as a way to help me deal with what had just happened the day before.

NOTE: I just checked my site and it's already exceeded the daily bandwidth limitation. Oh well so much for free hosting. :-)

Yet another adsense experiment

I just created a HUGE AdSense site with like eleventy seventy zillion jillion (ok more like 500) articles related to education in some way or another. It is riddled with AdSense and even has Amazon.com links. I must admit some of the articles even caught my own attention and I spent like an hour reading them.

Next step is to add the site to my RSS feed, submit to google and yahoo, and post on my MySpace blog. Then I just wait and see what happens.
